Love Conference – February 16, 2021

by | February 9, 2021 |

Next week is the Love Conference at Florida International University. Phillip M. Carter, Director of the Center for Humanities in an Urban Environment, has organized it. So, mark your calendars. Tuesday, February 16 at 4:00 EST. It’s a zoom conference, of course.

I have attended many of the conferences Phillip has organized during this past year. And I have loved every one of them. Phillip has a gift for gathering speakers with unique perspectives on the questions of our times. Among them: Contagious: The Outbreak Narrative. Positive: HIV in the Arts, Medicine, and Everyday Life. Black Humanities Matter.

And now he has chosen Love. And chosen me to participate!

Love Conference: The Speakers

Once again Phillip has lined up a diverse slate of speakers.

Jack Halberstam is an English Professor at Columbia University. His talk is “Beyond Caring. Human Animal Interdependency.

Elizabeth Hordge-Freeman is a Sociology Professor at the University of South Florida. Her talk is “Affective Capital. Low as Resistance Resource and Liability in Black Diasporic Families.”

Whitney Bauman is a Religious Studies Professor at Florida International University. His talk is “Earthly Erotics. Developing a Critical Planetary Romanticism.”

Love Conference

Jenny Davis is an Anthropology Professor the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. Her talk is “Love and the Erotics of Queer Indigenous Relationality.”

And, finally, there’s me. I represent Linguistics. However, I’m participating in my role as a romance writer. My talk is “The Art of the Romance Novel.”
